Across the country, many small businesses may now finally be ramping up their efforts to get everyone back to the office and working in a centralized location once again. Part of that effort, however, necessitates that the workflows and file sharing efforts they've relied on in the work-from-home portion of the year be integrated back into their preexisting systems effectively.

A recent poll of small business managers from Procensol found that almost 60% of those decision-makers say they think a digital transformation is important for getting their companies to the next level, but that they are not particularly well-prepared to embrace those changes. Indeed, 10% have already put such efforts on the back burner, including for reasons simply related to the difficulty of implementing them.

A better understanding
However, Procensol notes that these issues are often a problem of perception and a case of companies that don't know what they don't know. While it may take some effort to implement document management processes, especially after using them to one extent or another for remote work, it probably wouldn't be as time- or effort-intensive as some might think and, in fact, the return on those investments would likely be almost immediate and profound.

Getting to the next step
Of course, that poll was conducted before the novel coronavirus pandemic. Now, there's plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that the "digital transformations" companies of all sizes have undergone in recent months were more forced on them than being part of a big, planned change, according to small business executive and author Peter High, writing for Forbes.

Modern technology such as video chat platforms and extremely high-speed internet connections made the transition to work-from-home relatively seamless, but still required a lot of nimble decision-making, the report said. Companies would be wise to take that same energy back to implementing positive changes for in-person work.

Certainly, now is the time for companies to consider where they stand when it comes to implementing versatile, responsive document management solutions in their everyday processes. The more they can do to review their options so they make the right investments at the right time, the better off they will be going forward.
